Sports, Fitness, & Recreation Minimize

SandLot Wiffleball

Pitchers and catchers have reported so you know what that means!! Opening ceremonies for our Boys and Girls Club Stadium will be on Monday April 5th, 2010. This will kick off the beginning of our spring wiffleball season at the Boys and Girls Club. Don’t forget to sign up so you can play this season, and don’t forget to tell your friends!

Basketball

Calling all club members whom love basketball. This program is a beginner program that teaches the children different techniques of the game. Another aspect of this program is skill building. This is important not only to become a better player but to build the confidence that a good sportsman needs for the court. There will be 20 minutes of instruction and 40 minutes of game playing.

Pillo Polo League *New Program

What is Pillo Polo you ask?  It is the new game that has taken over the Club right now.  Pillo Polo is similar to the sport of Hockey.  This sport is played with a bouncy ball and soft polo sticks. This is a fast moving all inclusive game.  Club members will be divided up into teams, play games and have a blast with their friends.

SandLot Flag Football


One of our most popular programs, SandLot Flag Football allows our members the ability to play football during the off-season! It's time for the outdoor season of Flag Football to start, with Flag Football taking place on our back field, weather permitting! Players will not only be able to play their favorite position, but every member is also giving the opportunity to play quarterback. Stats are also kept throughout the season, and each week a new "Player to Watch Out For" is picked! If you enjoy playing football for fun this program is for you!

Education & Career Development Minimize

SAT Prep Course

This course consists of 8 one hour sessions which will focus on learning strategies to make you more successful on the SAT, and is taught by Dr. Mary Flynn-Maguire, an experienced teacher and recently retired school administrator.  Students will learn how the SAT is constructed, how to eliminate choices in multiple choice questions, what order to answer questions in, and how best to proceed when answering questions.  This course will be split into 2 sessions, 45 minutes of math and 45 minutes of English.  If one only has interest in math or English, they only have to come to that session! For more information, please contact Kristin Goncalves at the Club.

Learning with Legos *New Program

Lego’s have always been a huge hit at the Boys and Girls Club.  Starting this spring we will be launching a new program for the younger members to come and have some fun learning with Lego’s.  Club members will be using Lego’s to develop their math, science, and language skills.   Of course, Club members will be given some time to build and design their own creations

Technology Minimize

Clay Tech  *New Program

A brand new program at the Boys and Girls Club, Clay Tech brings claymation to our technology center!  Claymation is a fun, hands-on introduction to animation that anyone can do.  Over the course of our Spring session, members will work in groups to create storyboards, build characters, film and edit their own movies using clay characters!  How is that possible?  Claymation is a form of stop-motion animation that uses clay characters and props, which are photographed, moved slightly and photographed again!  When the pictures are strung together in a movie, the characters appear to be moving on their own.  Sound interesting?  Join Clay Tech today and see what it’s all about!

Movie Tech  *New Program

Have you always dreamed about starring in a movie?  Or maybe writing your own screenplay, or producing a movie?  Then this program is just for you!  For middle school students only, in this beginner level of Movie Tech, members will have the ability to explore the world of digital software and basic screenplay writing, and even have the opportunity to create their own short original movies!  Through the Spring session, we will discuss and learn the elements of scriptwriting, as well as technical elements involved in preparing a script for the big screen.  We will also learn about the production of a film, including the fundamentals of filming, editing and sound!  And of course, the big conclusion….a high quality, short movie written, produced and created by you!

The Arts Minimize

Ceramics with Sally

Ceramics students will be introduced to many construction methods.  Techniques for building, forming, and shaping the clay will be explored.  The pottery wheel may also be used.  The artists will discover their own style while in the studio.  Sally will show the students examples of completed pieces, including her own.  The complete process of creating from start to finish of a clay piece teaches the class about craftsmanship.  Sally’s years of experience has always enriched this class.  The artists will leave with more than finished works of art.

Mural Art

Mural art get-togethers for Middle School students only A BIG DEAL!  You will design and paint BIG works of art, as a group.  Themes may include pop music, sports, abstract art, peace, giant doodles, RBG Club, and more of course.  Get your friends in on this one.  You will need your needs, to help out with the project.  Dance while you paint to the music.

Wearable Art

Create one of a kind wearable art.  Your imagination is your only limit.  Create your own unique accessories, jewelry and beaded “things.”  You are going to create awesome tees, bags and refab your jeans and sweaters too!  Maybe your sneakers need a remake.  “Whatever.”  You can be the design star!  Are you a fashion freak?  A fashionista?  So…what are you waiting for?  Get your friends here to maybe swap sleeves, collars, jewelry parts and more!  Bring in your old jeans, etc, to go crazy and design wearable art.

Puppet Workshop *New Program

The artist's in this class will craft a variety of puppets.  Starting with a simple "bag puppet", and then progressing to sock puppet, stick puppet, and hand puppets will be created. Many materials will be used, including paper, cardboard, plastic, paper mache', fabric, and an endless choice of embellishments of course.  Wild animals, talking flowers, flying insects, animated food group,curious characters, super heroes,and the endless list goes on for possible puppet subjects.  The class will end with a puppet show starring a crazy cast of the artists' creations.  This class will be creative and funny!

Draw on your Imagination

This spring art program will spring your creative mind into action.  The artists in this class will be asked to really think, dream and imagine.  A variety of drawing styles and techniques will be investigated, with many shading methods and line options being looked at.  Drawings will be rendered in black and white and color.  The materials used will include pencil, sharpie, pastel and more.  It is possible that paint or collage may be placed in the background.  The students may bring in personal diaries, sketchbooks and photos for this class.  This class will be exciting and eye opening.

Drama Matters

Calling all actors and actress!!!!  Are you dramatic?  Can you do amazing impressions of your favorite characters?  Well come sign up for the Drama Matters at the Boys and Girls Club.  Throughout the 8 weeks we will be discussing stage positioning, improv, how to direct, hair and makeup and much, much more.   The participants will be playing games as well as creating costumes for their own.  While having fun with their peers, club members will be increasing their self esteem, improving their speaking skills and ending with a short performance for our friends and family.  So, don’t forget to tell your friends and have your parents sign you up!!

Game Room Minimize
Cup Stacking

Cup stacking assists students develop their awareness, focus, and creativity while trying to beat the clock.  Stacking helps train the brain for sports and other activities where the use of both hands is important, such as playing a musical instrument or using the computer.  Sequencing and patterning are also elements of sport stacking, which can help with reading and math skills.  It's a craze that you cannot stop.  Can you be the fastest stacker at the Club?

Keystone Club

The Keystone Club is a small group character and leadership club for our high school members, which focuses on 3 core areas: Academic Success, Career Preparation and Community Service.  Meetings often include small projects, guest speakers, and ice breakers and Community Service projects include can food drives, the Holiday Stroll, and a partnership with Ridgefield Crossings.  For more information, please contact Kristin Goncalves or Brian Smith.
